Overgrown!

Now my garden is overgrown! Well, it is just the zucchini now that is overgrown. After a week of avoiding my gardening all my plants were out of control! I have spent a few mornings trying to get everything back under control; the pumpkins and tomatoes are okay, but the zucchini plants need some work!

my first tomatoes. half orange pumpkin. more pumpkins. overgrown zucchini plant. zucchini.

One morning last week when I was out getting the pumpkins in order I was finding squash bugs left and right. When I saw them I would grab them and squish them. I saw these two right next to each other so I grabbed them both and squeezed them, when I opened my hand they moved so I took the tip of pruning sheers that were in my other and squished one. Its guts squirted into my eye, I dropped everything (including the other bug that was possibly still alive) and ran inside to flush my eye with water because the insides of squash bugs burn when they come in contact with your eye! Anyway, I looked up the internal anatomy of insects to see what would burn so much (uric acid) and bug insides are very interesting. Why isn't it taught in biology class? Go read about hemolymph and spiracles!

Tomato plant that I broke and tried to save by putting in a vase update: just went into the trash over the weekend. We had a week of 100°F days and the poor little plant couldn't take up water fast enough, I guess its roots didn't really develop.
