Loom Knit Hat Pattern

Someone recently requested the pattern for knitting this hat so I am deciding to share it here too.

kari wearing hat

Materials:
Knifty Knitter yellow round 41 peg loom (spiral pattern will only work with 4x+1 pegs)
Approximately 81 yards super bulky yarn (I used Lion Brand Hometown USA)
Instructions:
1. Cast on using your method of choice.
2. Rows 1-10: *k2, p2; rep from * until one peg remains, k last peg.
3. Rows 11-finish: *k, yo, p2tog, k; rep from * until desired length.
4. Gather the last row of stitches and tie tightly to complete your hat.

If you use any of my patterns I would love to see photos of your finished pieces.

  1. Could you try to explain this a little better for me? I'm somewhat new to this, and don't quite understand what rep from * means.. replace?

Just a little more explanation on how to do steps 2 and 3 would be greatly appreciated!!

  2. Justin, rep is short for repeat.

For the first section you will knit 2 pegs, purl 2 pegs, knit 2 pegs, purl 2 pegs... Then knit the last peg of the row.

When working on the second section you will repeat these four stitches until the hat is large enough: knit, yarn over (move yarn over to the next peg and wrap the empty peg), purl the two stitches on the peg together, knit.

I hope this helps. If you have any more questions let me know.

  3. Thank you so much for the timely response!

Makes much more sense for me!

    Beginning the hat now!

  4. Okay another question, for the second part. When you say knit then yarn over. Do I knit a peg. then yarn over the next peg or yarn over the knitted peg? And then after the last knit do I knit again so it will be 2 consecutive knits?

  5. Yarn over the next peg, not the peg you just knitted. There will be two knits in a row. Your stitching would be like this:
    Peg 1- knit
Peg 2 - move yarn to peg 3 and wrap peg 2
Peg 3- purl the two stitches on the peg
    Peg 4- knit
    Peg 5- knit
    Peg 6 - yarn over
    Peg 7- purl two together
    Peg 8 - knit...

    Good luck!

  6. Kelly,
What a BEAUTIFUL hat! I LOVE my circle loom & am always happy to find a new pattern.
    Thank you for posting this.
I can't wait to try it!

  7. I tried this and I must be doing something wrong. It didn't turn out like this. I am a little confused with the "wrap the empty peg". I e-wrapped it and there is just a long stitch. Can you help please.

  8. I just updated the pattern to specify a 41 peg loom; your large round loom may be a different color than mine. If you are working on a loom that has a different number of pegs than that, this pattern will not come out right. (Especially if your number of pegs is divisible by four).

After moving the yarn from peg two to peg three, e-wrap peg two then purl both stitches on peg three as if they were one stitch. On the next round/row of stitches the e-wrapped stitch on peg two will be purled together with the stitch from peg one. Since there is an 'extra' peg at the end of the round/row your e-wrapped stitches will not be lined up on top of each other and will create the spiral as you complete more rows.

If you are still having troubles, let me know and I will take some pictures or make up a chart to help.

    1. Thank you for this explanation. I was trying this patter from a video in You tube. I love it. I did and undid my pattern 4 times until I gave up. The e-wrapped peg where aligned and I always end up with holes in the pattern. So now I know I need an odd number of pegs. Thanks this make sense!

  12. What is the name of the stitch (honey comb, popcorn, shell) you are using for the top of the hat?

    1. I'm not sure it has a name, I've been referring to them collectively as a swirl.

  13. The hat is beautiful. I am also new to loom knitting, and am trying new patterns, by trial and error. I hope to make a hat with this pattern soon.

  14. It would be helpful if you stated in the description that this pattern will ONLY WORK FOR 41 peg looms. Sometimes other patterns can be altered to fit your loom.. it wasn't until i was very involved in my attempt when I read the other comments on your post and discovered that my loom wasn't going to work. Beautiful hat though!

    1. Sorry it didn't work for you. Per your suggestion I've update the post to specify the spiral pattern will only work with 4x+1 pegs.

  15. I love this pattern so much! I have made 3-4 hats as gifts (and maybe kept one for myself...) and everyone loves them. I just finished up another one and posted about it on my blog with some photos. Thanks so much for sharing this lovely pattern!

  16. I feel I'm doing something wrong. I'm getting holes/gaps. Maybe I need to do more rows (I've done about 5 rows on the body). I have the yellow 41 peg loom.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I sent the above comment before finishing. On the body, where you say "u wrap", I'm doing the "u stitch" and then on the empty peg I'm doing the "e wrap". Is that correct?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I'm not sure where "u wrap" is in the pattern. You should knit then move the next stitch over and e wrap the empty peg. There will be some holes where the yarn over/e wrap stitch is, but once the hat is off the loom the gaps will fill in.

      Good luck!

  18. Hi, I want to make this knit hat pattern but I have 32 pegs so is it possible to make it?
    Please Help ASAP. Thank You.

    1. Since 32 is divisible by four this spiral pattern will not turn out; all the stitches will line up/stack instead of spiral. To get this pattern your number of pegs should equal 4x + 1 (25, 29, 33, 37, etc...); you could get a different looking spiral by doing any other number of pegs that is not divisible by four.
If you have a long loom you can use as many pegs as you need by cutting across the loom instead of going all the way around.

    2. Can you tell me what to do with the 1 left peg? reply me ASAP Please.... Thanks

    3. You'll continue knitting the four stitches.

  19. Thank you SO much for this pattern!! I have been using it to make hats for chemo patients, and they LOVE the hats! For those that are having difficulty understanding the directions for rows 11-finish, for p2tog and YO, here's a great video to help you understand the steps: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mJZkyU4vpSM

  20. May i just ask what kind of knit would look good in this kind of pattern? E wrap knit or flat knit?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I suggest e-wrap so it's easier to move stitches onto other pegs.

  21. Thank you so much, in fAct i have already made one using e wrap knit, my sisters also love it ....

  22. I'm in the process now of making the hat. I'm kind of new also to doing the p2tog. Since I'm a visual person I go to YouTube to find the videos to follow but some of them don't work the sts so its had to know how to do them. My friend knits all the time so she helped me understand them. Will let you know if the hat works out ok.

  23. This is an awful way of explaining a pattern.. hat is cute but you left a lot out and have to read comments to get it. You seemed to do this on purpose

    ReplyDelete

    1. The knitting pattern is written in a standard format and I did this on purpose. As you noted, the comments do contain clarification of the stitches which have helped those unfamiliar with the stitches. If you need additional clarification, I'd be happy to help.

    2. What a totally classy answer!! I dont think I would have been so kind or nice lol KUDOS to you. I havent made anything on my looms yet, so this pattern will be waiting in the wings till I have some experience under my belt. The hat is gorgeous and my daughter will be delighted when I finally have the ability to make it for her. Thank you for sharing!

    3. Thanks Peggy! The pattern is actually quite simple with only four different stitches. It could be your second project!

  24. i am not very good at following written patterns. Do you have a video tutorial that i can follow along?

    thanks

    1. Ruby, I haven't made a video tutorial and don't have plans to do that. In an earlier comment from years ago someone posted a youtube link of a video they followed for the body of the hat. I have not watched the video or know if the link is still active, but you could maybe try that if you need additional help.
