Garden Stuffs

The seedlings I direct sowed this year all perished. They were struggling for quite some time and never got very big, so I was not surprised when they had disappeared one day. On the opposite side is rhubarb; it is growing quite well! One plant is still on the small size, but overall they are looking quite full!

Other exciting garden news: dahlias have sprouted, I've cut them back and am looking forward to the future blooms. I planted a few watermelon and cucumbers. Hopefully they are cucamelons, but they might be regular cucumbers because the container was not labeled. I don't actually like cucumbers so fingers crossed. Included in that same bed are the snapdragons that over wintered (they are blooming again), some new snapdragons (they are blooming too), and potatoes that we missed from our harvest last year.

The squirrels have been digging in the garlic so they are all lying down and I am not feeling hopeful about a large harvest. Last year I planted two grapes and installed a large arch for them to grow over; there was an incident with one of the grape plants earlier this year where some slugs nibbled down the new growth almost completely. Luckily plants are resilient and other buds grew to take their place and now you can't tell it was nearly destroyed.

Do you remember I planted some pink dandelions last year? Well, they are still quite small, but alive. Blooming seems like it will happen in the distant future. Next spring maybe? The little fig tree is doing well though; it has FIVE figs and they are plumping up! Think I need to get little mesh bags to tie around them so the squirrels can't run off with them.
